Commander Shepard is the main character in Mass Effect, and is directly controlled by the player. Shepard's actions, whether generous or ruthless will decide the fate of the galaxy.

Shepard's background and pre-service history are chosen by the player during the character creation process. At the beginning of the game, Shepard is the Executive Officer on the SSV Normandy, a prototype Alliance frigate.
